- In the introduction, I dispose of the historical literature
proliferating solution concepts in three sentences: Cournot and
Bertrand each proposed one, and Bowley shows how to express an
infinite set of solution concepts parametricly!
- Then I summarize the ideas of Bresnahan and Robson, who provide
different ways of refining the many solutions. Again, each is
given one sentence.
- This is possible because the paper is very technical, and the
basic ideas can be expressed in words that correspond to a single
equation.
- It was necessary because this paper is in the form of a note or
comment on an earlier paper -- to save space the editor assumes
readers will be familiar with, or can refer to, the earlier paper.
- It is very important to remember that your audience affects how
you write.
