  1. In some English language text (except the reading about Arafat), find an example of a parallel expression.

    1. Quote the entire passage containing the parallel expression, enough to understand what the meaning and context are.
    2. Give a complete citation (what book, newspaper, etc; date, if a periodical, page number, etc.).
    3. Quote the parallel words in the form

    "A" = "B".

    1. Translate the passage into Japanese.
    2. Explain whether the parallel makes sense in Japanese or not.
  2. Repeat (a)--(e) for a Japanese phrase. In part (e), translate into English, of course.

In both questions, for part (b), use whichever language is more natural to cite the sources. For part (e), you may write explanations in whichever language is convenient for you, English or Japanese.

Due: February 10, 2009 12:00.
