Applying for scholarships is a good use of 2-3 hours of your time.

Note that this requires strategy.  You can only receive one
scholarship at a time, so if you apply early for one-time 10,000 yen
and get it, you can't apply for one for 100,000 per year until you
graduate (until the next year).  (Check the rules, but that's the way
it used to be.)
