Hi, everyone

I'm sorry, but I am not feeling well today, and have to prepare for
faculty meetings in the afternoon. I would like to postpone today's
zemi to tomorrow at 13:00. M2, U4, and those preparing for the
entrance exam will practice their presentations. *If these presenters
have other plans for tomorrow, get in touch as soon as possible.* If
you are not scheduled for presentation but have other plans, let me
know but attendance is optional. M1 practice will start next week.

M2, U4 should have slides more or less ready for the presentations in
the next two weeks.

The entrance exam is divided into three parts:
1. English (100 pts). TOEFL, TOEIC, or equivalent should be
    submitted at application time.
2. Written exam (100 pts). At exam time you choose one of three
fields, microeconomics, mathematics, or urban planning. Questions
are presented in Japanese and English, and you may answer in
Japanese or English. Mixing Japanese and English may leave a poor
impression, but do so if necessary (for example if you don't know
a word in your primary language but know it in the other).
3. Interview (200 pts). The interview is semi-structured, it is
conducted in Japanese or English at your option, and starts with
    your self-introduction.
    - name and examination ID number
    - motivation, explaining why you chose to study
      - in Japan (for foreign students)
      - at the University of Tsukuba in the MPPS program
      - under your advisor (me!)
    - plans and preparation for research
      - theme
      - importance of the research to the field of PPS and to society
      - proposed methodology
      - expected results
    - career plans
The self-introduction is allowed 5 minutes. The question and
answer period is about 9 minutes. Besides questions about your
self-introduction, you are likely to be asked how well you think
you did on the written exam, and if you did poorly, you may be
asked how to solve one of the problems again.

Steve
