Moving Turnbull Lab from 3E401 to 3F1223 to 3E406

Because of renovations in the 3E building, our lab has to move at the end of this month. We will move to temporary space in 3F1223, and after the renovations, back to 3E406 across the hall. (I may be turning Japanese because I took the opportunity to move to the south side of the building. It's a naturally warmer in the winter, and better lit year-round. Summer doesn't seem to be any worse than 3E401.)

Triage

Triage means to separate items into three groups. (In field medicine, it means (1) those who will survive without treatment, (2) those who won't survive with treatment, and (3) those who will benefit most from treatment because with treatment they survive and without it they die. Medical resources should concentrate on group 3.)

For us, the three groups are:

  1. Items to move to 3F1223 for use until March, mostly
    • furniture (tables, desks, chairs)
    • appliances
    • most books
  2. Items to move to storage
    • some furniture (tables, desks, chairs)
    • some books
    • some papers
  3. Items to discard
    • some furniture (mostly broken chairs)
    • papers
    • old course catalogs from university
    • obsolete electornic equipment especially connectors and power cords

Grouping

  1. Journals

Many journals and magazines are concealed behind books in the bookshelves and in file cabinets. Journals with many volumes should be kept together in one box unless they overflow, journals with few volumes can be used to fill partial boxes.

  2. Books

English and Japanese books should be grouped roughly as

    • textbooks of basic mathematics and microeconomics (for entrance examination study etc)
    • mathematics
    • economics
    • information technology
    • writing
    • other
