アウフヘーベン

- Tokyo's mayor, Yuriko Koike, faces a great problem she inherited
from earlier administrations: the move of Tokyo's great, historic
Tsukiji fish market from its eponymous location to new, larger,
modern quarters in Toyosu.
- She suggests that the resolution of the problem lies in Aufheben,
a concept of the German philosopher Hegel in which opposing thoughts
("thesis" and "antithesis") are "lifted up" together, and somehow
transformed into a synthesis. In English philosophy texts
"Aufheben" is often translated as "sublation", but it is an uncommon
word that doesn't have the pragmatic flavor of the German.
- This cyclical process, where thesis meets antithesis and they are
sublated into a synthesis, which becomes the thesis for a new round,
is the Hegelian dialectic. This is the philosophical foundation
for Marx's theory of history, dialectical materialism, and thus is
an important concept for historians and philosophers of social science.
- It so happens that the English Wikipedia article on Aufheben
(also Aufhebung) is fairly complete, while the Japanese
article (止揚) is a stub. It would be a reasonable subject for
the Final Report.
