The Developmental State
Next Previous Up Top
- Chalmers Johnson advocated the concept of the developmental state,
a form of capitalism which is guided by the state.
- The claim is that by focusing the effort of the economy on national
priorities, state guidance can prevent destructive competition and
preserve national values.
- In MITI and the Japanese Miracle, Johnson demonstrates how the
Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI, now
reestablished as the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry), in
collaborated with other "economic ministries," especially the
Ministry of Finance (MOF).
- This collaboration enabled MITI to restrict the modes of competition
and provide financial support.
